Reflections ... By Ashlee Planck

Reflections on CVSG projects in Vietnam
By Ashlee Planck, Brisbane
In August 2012, I spent an amazing 5 weeks in Vietnam; of which one was spent volunteering at The Company of Grace in Sai Gon, a fantastic organisation offering  young people with disabilities opportunities for vocational training. While I was there, Matt and Uli came to the centre along with their friend Wayne, to visit Hoa, the organisation’s director, and join in on one of my English lessons. We discovered that I grew up in the same town as where they now live – Coolum – and that I had also spent quite a bit of time in Germany and a friendship was sealed!
On one of my free days in Sai Gon, I was privileged to be able to visit 2 of the projects supported by Matt and Uli and their organisation the Coolum Vietnam Support Group. The first stop was The Hope School, a school for hearing impaired children. The Hope School was just that; hopeful! The students were engaged in the classroom and excited about the future and the teachers were kind and compassionate, encouraging the students to learn. The school felt like a safe haven in amidst the chaos of Sai Gon, where children with differing abilities, were valued and respected. We visited a few of the classrooms. The classrooms were well furnished, with small numbers. The students were so excited to see Matt and Uli again. Such big smiles and lots of giggles! They spoke English to varying degrees and were quite keen to fire all sorts of questions at me; the most popular being ‘How old are you?’ and ‘Are you married?!’.  The principle and vice-principle were also very accommodating, eager to show us around and demonstrate how they had used the money donated by the Coolum Vietnam Support Group. Al l in all, it was a wonderful experience!
The second project I visited with Matt and Uli was called the Peace Village. Matt and Uli warned me it would be tough. The Peace Village is an orphanage for children with moderate to severe disabilities. It is situated out the back of one of Sai Gon’s main hospitals. There are several rooms, with 5 to 10 cots each, and the children seemed to be divided by age. Although there were some play materials, there wasn’t much room to play and the children shuffled up and down the corridor.
The disabilities were diverse; there were children with Down Syndrome, others missing limbs, and others with skin disorders and hydro encephalitis. The nurses caring for the children were doing their very best but it was obvious that they were under staffed and under resourced.  Indeed, being there was not only tough, it was heartbreaking. It felt as though many of the children’s potential would be lost, due to inadequate care.To me, this was such an incredible shame.

Being there demonstrated to me how people with disabilities are often undervalued in Vietnamese society, and that change is as much to do about resourcing as it is about hearts and minds. This reinforced to me again just how important places like the Hope School and the Company of Grace are!
Visiting these two projects with Matt and Uli was a fantastic, yet heart-wrenching experience. I admire Matt and Uli’s passion and commitment for what they do and look forward to staying in touch and being involved in the future.

Testimony by J. & R. Martin

                                                                          Updated:  Jan 2013
Testimony by Juliana and Richard Martin

Richard and I met Matt and Uli through mutual friends and we listened to the story that they told about their times in Vietnam, the people they met and the dedicated work they carried out with unfortunate children.
These children needed sponsors to assist them to live an educated and as full a life as possible.

Matt and Uli were seeking sponsors for these children and so we became sponsors to 2 delightful girls, Nhu and Hue who are attending the Hope School for Hearing Impaired Children in Binh Thanh district Saigon, Vietnam. Other children are being sponsored in their education at the Hearing Impaired School, organized by Matt and Uli. It is truly an amazing work they are carrying out from their home on the Sunshine Coast and every dollar sponsored goes directly to students ... an incredibly generous and selfless couple filled with compassion and dedication to really assist these less fortunate children, who are in real need of help.

It was by chance that on a trip to Vietnam last November that Matt and Uli arranged for us to visit the Hope School and be met and welcomed by the Vice Principal, Diep Nguyen.
In our time there, we were taken and shown the school and introduced to the students.  It was the most beautiful experience being introduced to these happy, smiling students as their very proud teachers stood by ... all these children are deaf and the quality of their school work was quite incredible as too the songs they sang.
We met Nhu and Hue; delightful girls surrounded by their friends all supporting each other.

Some of the students can travel long distances each day to attend school and the education, friendship and camaraderie that we witnessed is enabling these children to look forward to the future.

Our visit to the Hope School and seeing what these remarkable students are achieving was an experience we will never forget. The fantastic work and dedication of Matt and Uli is both wonderful and humbling and we would encourage as much support as possible.

Testimony by Paul and Sally Battle

                                                                   Updated: Jan 2013

To: Coolum Vietnam Support Group:

In May 2010, our family comprising of Sally, myself and our 2 boys Luke 9yrs, and Wil 7yrs visited Vietnam for the first time.
We wanted to give our boys a better perspective of the world, and thought that they would begin to appreciate the different cultures, traditions, languages and lifestyles of families in other countries.

Vietnam holds an auspicious place in my heart as my 2 eldest brothers both served there in the Australian army corp. during the "American War" in the 1960’s and I had grown up knowing more than most kids my age about Viet Cong, Nui Dat, Long Tan etc.

Through Sally’s work, we had met Matt and Uli and became aware of their involvement with Vietnamese children through the Coolum Vietnam Support Group.
They showed us many captivating, unusual, funny and confronting photos that they had taken during their visits over there, and, through these, we became familiar with the Peace Orphanage in Saigon. Our boys were fascinated by what they saw in these captured moments and asked many questions about these wonderful, inspiring kids.

We ended up visiting this orphanage one day, and this was made possible through Matt and Uli’s connection with the facility, and it turned out to be an absolute highlight of our trip.
Our boys were a bit hesitant at first, but gradually remembered the photos they had been shown, and started to realise that these were the same children they had seen in those photos back home.
Soon, they were playing hand ball, jumping and running around oblivious to the fact that some of these new playmates had no arms, or no legs, or some deformity ... all these "differences" disappeared. The facilities provided gave these children some positive base for them to be nurtured, loved and educated.

We came away believing that this orphanage gave these kids so much more opportunity than they would have had otherwise, thanks to the support provided by the Coolum team.
If you ever have the chance, please support the Coolum Vietnam Support Group, as we have seen just what a difference they are making over there.

All our thanks and love,

Paul, Sally, Luke and Wil Battle

Email Excerpts

                                                                      June 2012
Excerpts from E-mails sent to Vietnam@westnet.com.au
since our last trip to Vietnam.

Hi M n U, Pleased to hear you have decided to head back over to VN, am sure you will have a very special Christmas experience there and bring much joy/love into the lives of many of the young ones you are supporting.

Just love the way you have stepped out of your comfort zone and reaching out to those less fortunate in VN and I know what you are doing will reap an eternal harvest.

God Bless and if we don’t see you prior to Christmas, have a wonderful Christmas experience

What an amazing trip you are having and all you are learning about 'things' that assist the people of Vietnam.

So sorry to hear about Nhu....she is not a strong girl so hope they can help her to be stronger and live a full life.

We read your mail....there is so much to do but every little bit can help, and what you both do is truly astounding.

Wish Diep and all her students well.

Congratulations Matt & Uli
You seemed to have covered a lot of people with the funds that you raised. I am sure the money would not go that far other than your personal attention.
You do a great job.

We continue to follow your blog with much interest and prayers. You have involvement in so many projects, it is inspiring!  I meant to ask you, have you ever talked to the Sozo Café people? Looks great too.
So much need, it is overwhelming. The Touch A Life project looks amazing, what incredible people!

We are counting the days until we come back, not sure when! I really wish we could have stayed longer.  If you ever feel like contacting the children’s home we went to, the couple who run it, along with their church are Sang and Jennifer.

Well, please let us know if you have any other prayer needs, and please say hi to Miss Kim from us.

Thanks so much M & U for your email and update – you certainly had a very productive time this year and I have no doubt much fruit will flow from all the seeds you have sown on this trip, just love what you are doing and the heart in which you do it – wonderful!!!!!!

Thank you very much for everything...
We' re glad that you were back home safe and had enough energy to type long emails to us.
Hope you have good rest before showing your friends your collection from VN...
Thanks a lot for the flowers... Wow... They're so pretty...Please take good care of yourself.
Lots of Love...

Thanks so much for that .. it looks like a great day .. can’t wait to see more.

We arrived home to the cold, but beautiful day, feeling somewhat disorientated!
Back to work tomorrow so all will resume to normal superfast.
We can’t wait to get back and to hear more .. already really missing the people and processing the emotions.
So nice to meet you, somehow feel for us it was a God moment.
Blessings to you and Uli.  Will write some more when the jetlag goes.

Welcome back and your trip sounded amazing......soooooooooooooooo  many good things you do for the children of Vietnam in all different aspects.  Would love to hear stories about the orphaned children you assist.  reading a book about street children in Vietnam at the moment post Vietnam war.............distressing stories .  If only the greedy West would do so much more instead of building castles for themselves and more.................
Your flower photos magnificent  ......... so colourful and full of beauty.  Thank you for posting them.
Hope too we hear good news on Nhu..........she is a frail young girl.

Lovely to hear from you and welcome back. Yes, I did follow your blog once in a while. You have done so much over there again – good on you. You are the kids’ Aussie angels. Great work.

Hi Matt  Thanks for the email... sorry for the delayed reply, I actually
got very sick .. perhaps food poisoning. .. still waiting for tests.
So I do not get it in VN, but come back home to get it  hahaha
Would love to chat and see if we can help in any way. Can't wait to get
back, I am talking to my friend Thao all the time, and the pastor guy
who runs the children's home.  Well, will look forward to hearing.
God bless

Thank you for your email. We' re glad that you both feel great. I think
we don't change our rules about the way to help kids that we are the ones
that will go see the cases and find the way to help people directly.
We agree with your opinion about your prefer helping Ut with his people
than this one. Hope everything is going well with you. I miss you and feel
like you 've been here so short this time so we didn't have enough time to
share...
Lots of love,

Hi M & U, so appreciate the update, sounds like a real adventure, dealing with all the issues & people etc, but I have no doubt you have made a BIG difference in the lives of many – Praise God!!!!!!!!!!!!
